Just Say Mochidoki!

Ever go to your local frozen yogurt store and see something

that looks like a type of transparent marshmallow? That is mochi for you!


After recieving Mochidoki in the mail to post about on @feedyoursoull, I decided to familiarize myself with the history behind mochi.


The similar appearing topping is actually a creation from rice grains, called mochigome. According to Mochidoki’s website, Mochi is the result of “harvested, hulled, and ground” mochigome that turns into a “fine powder called mochiko,” which is similar to sugar. The mochi dough is created after mochiko is combined with water, sugar, and steam. The result is chewy and fluffy like.

Mochi is the final result that you typically see at your local frozen yogurt stores, but did you know this topping is very traditional in Japan?

The first mochi ever eaten was by the emperors and is typically used as a symbol to bring in the New Year. The word “mochi” comes from the word “motsu” which means to hold or to have. To the Japanese, mochi is a food given by Heaven.

To be honest, mochi is so much better as a topping on frozen yogurt because it does not harden like a marshmallow.

Mochidoki made mochi even better by stuffing the rice cake with ice cream flavors like chocolate, black sesame, matcha green tea, and salted caramel.

The process is not an easy one because the mochi is hot and sticky which would make the cold ice cream melt as the mochi is being wrapped around it into a ball.
